Former Real Madrid and Hungarian soccer great Ferenc Puskas dead at age 79.

Ferenc Puskas, who captained the great Hungarian national team of the 1950s and won three European Cup titles with Real Madrid, died Friday at age 79.

Considered one of the all-time greats of world soccer, Puskas died at 7 a.m. local time at the Kutvolgyi hospital in Budapest due to respiratory and circulatory failure, family spokesman Gyorgy Szollosy said.

Puskas had been hospitalized for six years with Alzheimer's disease and was being treated for a fever and pneumonia in recent days. He had been in intensive care since September.

Nicknamed the "Galloping Major" in reference to his army rank, Puskas scored 84 goals in 85 matches for Hungary between 1945 and 1956. The stocky, left-footed forward guided the "Magical Magyars" to an Olympic gold medal in 1952 and to the final of the 1954 World Cup, where they lost to West Germany.

Puskas also spent part of 1968 in Canada, coaching the Vancouver Royals of the North American Soccer League.

One night in Toronto that summer, he teamed with another Hungarian soccer great, Ladislav Kubala in a friendly soccer match. Kubala was coach of the Toronto Falcons at the time.

Puskas starred in two of the most famous games in European soccer history - scoring twice in Hungary's stunning 6-3 upset over England at Wembley Stadium in 1953, and scoring four goals in Real Madrid's 7-3 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1960 European Cup final.

"There is not one Hungarian who would be left untouched by the death of Ferenc Puskas," Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said in a statement. "The 20th century's most well-known Hungarian has died. ... The nation's striker is gone."

To millions of fans in Hungary, Puskas was known simply as "Ocsi" or "little brother."

"Of all of us, he was the best," the late Nandor Hidegkuti, a teammate on the legendary Hungarian national side, said at Puskas' 70th birthday party in 1997. "He had a seventh sense for soccer - if there were 1,000 solutions, he'd pick the 1001st."

In 1999, Puskas was voted the sixth-best player of the 20th century, behind Pele, Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Alfredo Di Stefano and Diego Maradona.

According to the German-based International Federation of Football History and Statistics, Puskas was the world's third-most successful national championship player.

Studying records going back to 1888, the Federation listed the top scorers in national championships and Puskas scored 511 goals in 533 games between 1943 and 1966, behind only Pele and Josef Bican.

Puskas was born Ferenc Purczeld on April 2, 1927, in Kispest, a working-class district in Budapest.

He was 10 when his father, himself a central defender for Kispest, changed the family name to Puskas.

"When I was a kid I liked to kick rocks in the street, always making sure I'd hit a tree or another rock. It was murder on my shoes, but great training," Puskas wrote in an article for London's Daily Mirror after Hungary's memorable victory over England.

Puskas made his professional debut with Kispest on Dec. 6, 1943, at the age of 16.

Although Hungary won gold at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, its greatest moment came on Nov. 23, 1953, when the "Golden Team" beat England for the host nation's first home defeat by a non-British opponent.

"It was like racehorses against carthorses," England winger Tom Finney said. "They were the greatest national side I played against, a wonderful team to watch with tactics we'd never seen before."

Puskas said: "We should have won by more, but we had never played against the Brits before."

When the teams met again in Budapest in 1954, Puskas scored two more goals as Hungary won 7-1.

Hungary was heavily favoured to win the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. But Puskas wasn't fully fit and the Germans, led by Fritz Walter, won 3-2, despite trailing 2-0 at halftime.

"We had an off day," Puskas, never known for using too many words, remarked years later.

Several Italian club teams tried to lure Puskas in 1947, but the offer was turned down.

"I wouldn't leave my parents, my friends, or Kispest for anything," he said at the time.

Under communism, Puskas was given the rank of major when the Kispest team was renamed Honved (Soldier) and, formally, attached to the Hungarian army.

But Puskas was never in the army as such and when given a gun to shoot, "I managed to hit the air," he said.

The national team was on tour at the time of Hungary's 1956 revolution and Puskas chose not to return when the uprising was crushed by the Soviets.

He defected to Spain and played for Real Madrid from 1958-66, endearing himself to fans who called him "Pancho." Although he was past 30, overweight and thought to be past his prime, he helped the club win five straight Spanish league titles during that time.

Puskas was part of the squad which won the European Cup in 1959, 1960 and 1966. He missed the 1959 and 1966 finals through injury but collected winners' medals after playing in earlier rounds.

Puskas was the Spanish league's top scorer four times, netting 512 goals in 528 games for Madrid.

"His playing style revolutionized Spanish sport," wrote Spanish sports commentator Andres Merce Varela. Real Madrid teammate and fellow all-time great Alfredo di Stefano simply called him a "super talent."

"The Real Madrid family feels deep sadness over the passing of one of its greatest legends," the team said in a statement Friday, adding that Puskas "is considered the best goal-scorer of the 20th century and one of the best soccer players in history."

Puskas took Spanish citizenship and played for the Spain national side four times, including at the 1962 World Cup. He retired in 1967 at age 39.

Back in Hungary, Puskas was charged with treason in absentia and stripped of his military rank. It was restored after the collapse of communism and he was even promoted to colonel in 1992, a year after he resettled in Hungary.

Puskas went into coaching and won two Greek championships with Panathinaikos, which he also guided to the final of the 1971 European Cup. He also had coaching spells at Real Murcia and AEK Athens, among others, and a four-game stint as Hungary coach in 1993.

The Budapest stadium was renamed Ferenc Puskas Stadion in 2002.

Puskas is survived by his wife, Erzsebet, and a daughter, Aniko. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.

Real Madrid and Hungary legend Puskas 'critical'.

Real Madrid great Ferenc Puskas is in critical condition in a Budapest hospital, according to media reports.

Sport daily Nemzeti Spor said the 79-year-old, who has been in intensive care for two months, is suffering from a fever and pneumonia.

Puskas has been confined to hospital for six years with Alzheimer's disease.

He led Hungary's Golden Team of the early 1950s, before taking Spanish citizenship and becoming part of Real Madrid's all-conquering team.

Puskas scored a remarkable 83 goals in 84 matches for Hungary between 1945 to 1956, many of them with his hammer of a left-foot.

After leading Hungary to the 1952 Olympic Gold medal, he was part of the Mighty Magyars who became the first overseas team to beat England on home soil in 1953, scoring twice in the 5-3 win at Wembley.

Hungary then rolled England over 7-1 in Budapest and were consequently installed as favourites for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland.

But injury to Puskas severely hampered the Magyars and they lost in the final to Germany.

Puskas joined Real Madrid and, along with Alfredo di Stefano, was the inspiration behind a string of domestic and European titles.

He scored four goals in Real's 7-3 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in a remarkable final at Hampden Park in 1960, and won the European Cup three times with Madrid side.

In all, he scored 512 goals for Real in 528 matches and in 1962 he took out Spanish citizenship in time to play for his adopted country in the 1962 World Cup.

    Big names still snubbed.

David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Raul Gonzalez are three of Real Madrid's biggest stars.

All three have been snubbed by their national team coaches and can't find a way back.

Former England captain Beckham was dropped by Steve McClaren after the World Cup and, despite the absence of eight squad players due to injuries, there is no room for the Madrid midfielder for today's friendly against Netherlands in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Van Nistelrooy won't be there either, even though he scored four goals in Madrid's 4-1 Spanish league victory over Osasuna on Sunday.

Netherlands coach Marco van Basten dropped the striker after the World Cup and Van Nistelrooy has since said that he won't play for the national team as long as the former AC Milan soccer great is in charge.

Gonzalez, currently playing midfield on the right side for Madrid, has fallen out of favour with Spain's veteran coach Luis Aragones, whose team hosts Romania today. This is the second game Raul has missed, even though he is Spain's all-time leading scorer with 44 goals from 102 matches.

"With me he has never played as a right-sided midfielder," Aragones said. "Raul can play in any position, but in my opinion he is a second striker."

The games are among 17 friendlies being played alongside seven Euro 2008 qualifying games.

Three-time champion Germany seems to be cruising to the championship -- being co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland -- and is confident of making it four wins in four Group D games when it visits Cyprus. A victory will mean the Germans regain top spot from the Czech Republic, which hosts Denmark in a friendly today. The Cypriots, who have never come close to reaching one of soccer's big events, outplayed Ireland 5-2 in Group D action a month ago.

British bookmakers rate the Germans the 11-2 favourites to win Euro 2008. Germany has won five games in a row.

Portugal, the other World Cup losing semifinalist, is struggling to qualify, however. Luiz Felipe Scolari's team has never won a major soccer title and currently lies in fifth place in Group A, six points behind group leader Serbia, as it hosts Kazakhstan in Coimbra, Portugal.

In other Group A games, second-place Finland should be confident of beating next-to-last Armenia at home. Belgium and Poland, just behind the top two, face each other in Brussels, Belgium.

The other two Euro 2008 games -- Israel-Croatia and Macedonia-Russia -- are both in Group E and the results could cause major problems for England.

England could slip to fourth if Israel and Croatia tie. England, Croatia, Israel and Macedonia each have seven points and Russia five.

    Real waiting on Beckham.

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon remains hopeful David Beckham will remain at the Bernabeu - despite admitting three new players are likely to arrive in January.

Teenage defender Marcelo was unveiled as a Real player today and will definitely be moving to the Spanish capital in the new year.

Calderon also revealed Madrid had reached agreements to bring Gonzalo Higuain and Fernando Gago to the club.

The only question to be resolved is when River Plate striker Higuain, 18, and Boca Juniors midfielder Gago, 20, come to the club - be it in January or next summer.

Calderon: Higuain, Gago have agreed Real Madrid deals.

A buoyant Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has declared Marcelo's signing this week will soon be followed by Argentine pair Gonzalo Higuain and Fernando Gago.

River Plate striker Higuain has already declared he wants to join Real in January, while Boca Juniors are believed to have slapped a media ban on Gago as his agent pushes club president Mauricio Macri to accept Real's offer.

Calderon said: "The one of Marcelo is a very opportune incorporation. We initiated a great signing. Today it was Marcelo and tomorrow there will be Gago and Higuain. Both have reached an agreement with us."

The Real president also admitted "it will be logical" that Marcelo plays the second-half of the season with Real Madrid B due to his lack of a European passport.

    Milan Concedes Real Double Defeat.

AC Milan executive Ariedo Braida has revealed that he was given the cold shoulder by Real Madrid transfer targets Fernando Gago and Gonzalo Higuain.

The former is a midfielder at Boca Juniors, while the latter plays up front for rivals River Plate.

Gago’s agent has already begun talks with Real general manager Predrag Mijatovic.

"The players only want to go to Madrid," Braida moaned to Spanish daily AS on his way out of Argentina.

Osasuna fined after player hit with lighter.

Osasuna was fined 3,000 euros (C$4,380) after Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas was struck on the head with a lighter thrown from the crowd at a recent Spanish league game.

The Spanish soccer federation also warned Osasuna that its Reyno de Navarra stadium would be closed if there was a repetition, news reports said Wednesday.

Casillas was hit on Sunday as he collected the ball from behind the goal in the 43rd minute of Madrid's 4-1 victory.

    Higuain wants Madrid move quick.

River Plate youngster Gonzalo Higuain wants a move to Real Madrid to be completed quick according to his father.

Jorge Higuain said: "Gonzalo is very excited because Madrid are the most important organisation in the world.

"River wants that he leaves in June of next year, but when presented with an offer from Madrid it is very difficult that I say no. Better to close now the transfer than in June."

    Madrid unveil record TV deal.

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has confirmed the club have agreed a seven-season TV rights contract worth 800 million euros.

However Calderon did not diclose the name of the Spanish company which bought the rights. The contract will begin in the 2008/09 season.

"It's the richest contract in the history of world sport," said Calderon during a press conference on Wednesday.

Calderon said more details on the contract would be forthcoming in the coming days.

Sogecable hold the club's television rights until the end of the season. The company pays Real 55 millions euros per season.

    Marcelo joins Real Madrid.

Brazil left back Marcelo has joined Real Madrid from Fluminense.

Marcelo passed a routine medical Tuesday and will be presented at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium the following day, Madrid said on its website.

News reports said the defender has signed a 5½-year contract.

"I'm very happy and I hope to return the affection with many titles," Marcelo said.

Madrid president Ramon Calderon described Marcelo as "a pearl which half of Europe wanted."

"He has come to Real Madrid, continuing what should happen, that the good players have to be here," Calderon was quoted as saying by the website of sports daily Marca.

Marcelo, for whom Madrid has reportedly paid six million euros (C$8,750,000), is an 18-year-old defender whose style has been compared to Brazilian star Roberto Carlos.

Calderon said Carlos has extended his contract by a year, tying him to the club until June 2008.

"It is what we all wanted. He is very happy at Madrid. Marcelo is coming to be (Roberto Carlos') substitute the day he decides to retire," Calderon said. "He's a very young player who will bring freshness and life to the club. He is coming to help us renew the club."

Three of Madrid's four signings after Calderon was elected in July are more than 30 years old - Ruud van Nistelrooy, Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson.

Even though Marcelo would be free to play for Madrid once January's transfer window opens, he reportedly may start out in the club's reserve team, Castilla, which plays in the Spanish second division.

Marcelo - whose full name is Marcelo Vieira da Silva Junior - has been capped twice under Brazil coach Dunga. He scored on his debut against Wales in September, but hasn't been included for Wednesday's friendly with Switzerland.

Marcelo is Madrid's seventh Brazilian player. The others are Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo, Robinho, Emerson, Cicinho and Julio Baptista, who is on loan to Arsenal this season.

Calderon added Tuesday that Madrid would soon sign an Argentine player. This could be River Plate striker Gonzalo Higuain or Boca Juniors midfielder Fernando Gago.

    Becks bothered by knee problem.

David Beckham is struggling with a problem to his left knee, and he remained in the gym alongside injured striker Ronaldo while the majority of their team-mates took part in a group practice session.

Beckham played the final seven minutes of Sunday's league match at Osasuna, which Real won 4-1 to climb back up to third in the table.

Real's next match is against Racing Santander at the Bernabeu on Saturday.

Real Plan Most Expensive Winter Transfer Campaign Ever.

Real Madrid are planning the most expensive midwinter transfer campaign ever undertaken by a football club.

The Spanish giants are prepared to splash out up to 30 million euros (38.5 million dollars) on young South Americans Marcelo, Fernando Gago and Gonzalo Higuain.

This is much more than most Spanish clubs spend every summer, let alone in winter, and will take Real's year-on-year spending on transfers to well over 100 million euros.

Marcelo Vieira Da Silva Junior, to give him his full name, is already in Madrid, to finalize a seven-year contract and to undergo the usual medical checks.

The 18 year-old left back - who is already a full international for Brazil - is seen by Real as the natural successor to Roberto Carlos, now 33 and slowing up by the week.

Real will pay Rio club Fluminense around 7 million euros for Marcelo.

Young Argentinians Gago and Higuain are going to be even more expensive than Marcelo.

Boca Juniors are asking for around 16 million euros for playmaker Gago, 21.

Tuesday's online version of Marca quotes Real sporting director Pedja Mijatovic as saying that "Gago will be very good for us, he has a good touch on the ball and a lot of quality.

"I think we have done the right think in going for him, but the deal is still not done. Other big clubs are after him, but he prefers to come to Madrid."

Rival sports daily As, meanwhile quotes Higuain as saying that "it would be really lovely to play for Real Madrid."

Higuain, 18, is a free-scoring forward or right-winger for River Plate, who would demand around 9 million euros for his sale.

While the Madrid media are looking forward to the arrival of these young Latins, part of the media in the Spanish provinces is more critical of Real's policy.

Valencia sports paper Super Deporte said on Tuesday that "spending so much money in winter should really be seen as a sign of failure, especially after spending 70 million euros in the summer."

Real are third in the Spanish Liga, behind Barcelona and Sevilla, and second in their Champions League group, behind French champions Lyon.

Catalan television channel TV-3, for its part, pointed out late on Monday that "signing so many players in winter carries its risks...by raising the expectations of the fans, regarding young players who will need time to adapt and settle in."

    Madrid set for double signing.

Real Madrid are set to make offers for Argentine youngsters Fernando Gago and Gonzalo Higuain. The duo are both keen on moves to Madrid.

"Gago would be good for us. He has a great touch and is a quality player," Mijatovic told Onda 6

"We are interested in him but it isn't a done deal yet. There are other big clubs interested as well but he wants to come to Real."

    Cassano returns to Madrid training.

Real Madrid striker Antonio Cassano returned to full training on Saturday, a day after the club lifted his suspension for criticizing coach Fabio Capello.

Madrid said Saturday that Cassano had been included in its squad for Sunday's league visit to struggling Osasuna.

The Italian replaced Ronaldo, who is sidelined for a month with a knee injury.

Madrid allowed Cassano to resume training after receiving an apology at a meeting with club officials on Friday, sports daily Marca said.

The 24-year-old forward reportedly lost his temper with Capello after the coach ordered him to warm up on the touchline for nearly all the second half of Madrid's 3-1 win at Gimnastic Tarragona on Oct. 28.

Cassano, who joined Madrid from AS Roma in January, had been exercizing alone since then.
