Baptista Wants To Stay With Madrid.

Julio Baptista has said that he is keen to stay at Real Madrid after the club's technical secretary said that he hoped the Brazilian would stay.

The 25-year-old returned to the Bernabéu after a year on loan at Arsenal and revealed that he wanted to prove himself at the Bernabéu.

While Fabio Capello was still in charge a question mark hung over Baptista's head and he was linked with away from the Spanish giants.

After an impressive performance for Brazil in the recent Copa América, however, Madrid's technical secretary, Miguel Ángel Portugal, said that he hopes the player stays.

"It pleases me that they have praised me because I want them to have faith in my football," Baptista told Punto Radio.

"What I really desire is to play for Real Madrid and to succeed there.

"I do not want to look for another team. If you sign a contract, and you are happy, you do not wish to change team."

Baptista is now hoping to win the confidence of new Madrid coach, Bernd Schuster, during their pre-season training camp in Irdning, Austria.

"I hope that he is good for Real Madrid and all of us," he continued.

"What I want is to be able to help, and to be able to play, and if the trainer trusts you, even better."

REYES EYES GUNNERS CLASH.

Jose Antonio Reyes is hoping Real Madrid meet his parent club Arsenal in Friday's Champions League draw.

Reyes, who moved to the Bernabeu in a loan-swap deal involving Julio Baptista this summer, said: "It would be beautiful game between two teams that play good football.

"I would really like it. Everyone likes to play at Arsenal's ground."

Real Madrid finished second in Group E behind Lyon, meaning they can be drawn with any of the group winners, with the exception of fellow Primera Liga side Valencia. Arsenal finished top of Group G.

It is unlikely that Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello would share Reyes' enthusiasm for a tie with the Gunners, who eliminated him and his former team Juventus last season at the quarter-final stage.

Heartfelt gratitude, admiration and respect for the late Ferenc Puskas.

Ferenc Puskas Biro died on November 17 due to a long illness he had been suffering. He was 79 years old. Puskas was born in Budapest on April 2 1927 and played for Real Madrid between 1958 and 1967. He is considered to be the best goal scorer of the 20th Century and one of the best players in football history. Puskas won five Spanish Leagues and three European Cups with Real Madrid. The whole Madridista family grieves the loss of one of its greatest legends.

Official Announcement from Real Madrid
Heartfelt gratitude, admiration and respect for the late Ferenc Puskas

Real Madrid wish to express their deepest grief for the passing away of Ferenc Puskas, legendary player of our Club from 1958 to 1967 and to convey their heartfelt gratitude, admiration and respect for one of the biggest stars in the history of the Madridista pantheon.

In the minds of all Madridista fans, the name of Puskas is linked to the biggest domestic and international successes of Real Madrid and most specifically to the European Cup. An entire generation grew up watching the feats of this brilliant Hungarian player, his sole mention reminiscent of their younger years, trading picture cards, black and white TV sets and sepia-toned photography.

On this painful hour, Real Madrid wish to thank a person and player that gave everything for his Club, and express their admiration for his footballing talent and their respect for a phenomenal human being.

Ferguson remembers 'special' Puskas

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Ferenc Puskas as "a very special player" following news of the legendary Hungarian's death.

The Manchester United manager met Puskas on more than one occasion and was in the crowd when the former Real Madrid star enjoyed one of the most memorable nights of his career. However, while Ferguson will never forget Puskas' four-goal salvo in the 1960 European Cup final win over Eintracht Frankfurt at Hampden Park, a visit to Ibrox three years later also sticks in the mind.

"I was lucky to see Puskas play quite a few times," said Ferguson. "I have many memories of him. I was at the European Cup final in 1960 but I also saw him score the only goal against Rangers at Ibrox, before he got a hat-trick against them when Real scored six in the second leg."

He added: "In his day he was a special player without question, part of that great period for Hungarian football. How they did not win the World Cup in 1954 is beyond me.

"It is sad news. But when a great player like that passes, you can at least reflect on what a great player he was and the great games he played in."

Puskas was part of the 'Magical Magyars' team that became the first Continental side to beat England at Wembley in 1953, a game Ferguson remembers well.

"There was one point when Puskas cut back inside Billy Wright and took him so far out of the game he had to pay three and six to get back into the ground," he laughed.

"He was a marvellous player in a fantastic team. The following month they went to Scotland and beat them as well.

"The European Cup final at Hampden was amazing. He scored four then but he also got three against Benfica in 1962 when Real Madrid lost.

"Can you imagine scoring a hat-trick in a European Cup final and not winning? That is amazing."

Wenger - Puskas was a sensational player

Arsène Wenger has paid tribute to Ferenc Puskas, the Hungary and Real Madrid legend who died at the age of 79 on Friday morning.

Puskas led the revered Hungary team of the early 1950s before inspiring Real Madrid to a string of domestic and European trophies. He scored 512 goals in 528 games for the Spanish giants and netted 83 times in 84 international appearances.

"As a player he was absolutely fantastic not only from the very little I saw, but also what people told me," said Wenger at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

"I saw a little bit of him at Real Madrid because I had a black and white television. But people told me he was amazing. The fact that he won what he won and he got the respect from everybody as well tells you a lot.

"It tells you a little bit of what life was like at that time. He was one of the two or three best players in the world and at the end of his life he had nothing to survive on.

"People had to put money together so he could be treated in another way because he had Alzheimer's and that's what life was at that time - greatness and difficult times as well.

"As a coach he had a difficult career, he was ill but we have great respect for him because he was a sensational player."

Puskas, who scored four times in Madrid's famous 7-3 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1960 European Cup Final, was part of the Mighty Magyars side which became the first overseas team to beat England on home soil in 1953.

He was voted the 20th century's sixth best player by the International Federation for Football History and Statistics. Wenger believes Puskas would have been a giant of the game regardless of the era he played in.

"I don't like to compare players from different times but I always say the best from their generation would have adapted and would still be the best today.

"It's difficult to ask if he was better than Zidane but I saw a guy today saying he had the brain of Zidane, the determination of Rooney and the skill of some Arsenal players, so he must have been a hell of a player."

Reyes rules out Arsenal return.

Real Madrid striker Jose Reyes has shot down any chance of returning to Arsenal when his loan expires in June.

Reyes told The Sun he was overjoyed to have left the Gunners: "I'm delighted with my start and a big part of that is down to the coach because he has confidence in me. At Arsenal I wasn't happy and I didn't like being in London. It's not possible to hide that when you go on to the pitch. But here it's completely different. I'm happy, I feel comfortable in Madrid and that helps.

"When you've got players on the bench like Beckham, Robinho and Cassano all after a place, it's a big motivation to make sure you perform and stay in the team. But the fans can still see a lot more from me. I can give twice as much.

"Every game I go out there with a point to prove - and that is I want to stay. I don't want to go back to Arsenal."

Baptista moves to Arsenal as Reyes joins Real Madrid.

Brazilian international Julio Baptista has joined Arsenal from La Liga side Real Madrid for an undisclosed fee, with Gunners forward Jose Antonio Reyes joining the Spanish side in a reverse move.

Baptista (24) can play in midfield or as a forward and has been a target of the Club for some time, attracting attention with performances in Spain with Sevilla where he scored an impressive 38 goals from 63 appearances in two seasons, including five goals in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup campaign. Nicknamed ‘the Beast’, Julio joined Real Madrid last season and scored nine goals in 45 appearances which include the Champions League fixtures against Arsenal.

The 24 year old has also made 18 international appearances for his country scoring three goals, and while not called up for the 2006 World Cup was a member of Brazil’s winning squads at both the 2004 Copa America and also last year’s Confederations Cup.

Arsenal and Spain forward Jose Antonio Reyes appeared in all five competitions last season making a total of 110 appearances scoring 23 goals, and to date has won championship and FA Cup honours with Arsenal.

Reyes (22) has made 21 appearances for the Spanish national side and made one appearance at the 2006 World Cup, setting up the only goal in the win over Saudi Arabia.

Arsène Wenger, Arsenal manager said: “Julio Baptista will be a great addition to our squad. He is a powerful young international and is a versatile footballer who can operate both in midfield and as a striker. He has shown his potential over the past few seasons in Spain with both Real Madrid and Sevilla and we’re looking forward to him joining us. While welcoming Julio we would like to wish Jose the best of luck for his time in Spain.”

Reyes and Baptista in possible exchange.

Arsenal's Jose Antonio Reyes and Real Madrid's Julio Baptista are close to swapping teams, news reports said on Wednesday.

Citing Reyes' agent, Herminio Menendez, news agency Efe said the two clubs were holding talks aimed at agreeing on an exchange before the transfer deadline at midnight Thursday.

Madrid has made earlier cash bids to sign Reyes but Arsenal's insistence on a reported fee of €18 million (US$23 million) halted any deal.

However, it appears that by offering Baptista Arsenal is much more interested.

The London club hoped to sign Baptista from Sevilla a year ago although the Brazil midfielder instead chose to join Madrid in a €20 million (US$25 million) deal.

However, Baptista is regarded as dispensable by Madrid coach Fabio Capello, who took charge in July and has already brought in four new players - Juventus' Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson, Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Lyon's Mahamadou Diarra.

A deal would end Atletico Madrid's hopes of signing Reyes. Madrid's crosstown rival has also had offers rejected.

The 22-year-old forward has not played for Arsenal this season and would be eligible to play for Madrid in this season's Champions League.

Reyes, who joined Arsenal from Sevilla in January 2004 and who last year extended his contract to 2011, has long since shown interest in a return home.

In February 2005, the Spain international was kidded into acknowledging his desire for a move during a mock interview staged by a Spanish radio station.

Last month, he told the Spanish press he was keen to leave Arsenal for Madrid, saying he hadn't adapted to life in England, the language or the climate.

Reyes said last weekend he wouldn't play again in the English league and suggested he didn't mind which Spanish club he joined.
