Real retain unbeaten record with Atletico draw.

Real Madrid maintained their unbeaten start to the new Spanish league campaign - but lost ground on leaders Barcelona - after a 1-1 draw against crosstown rivals Atletico on Sunday (1/10).

Miguel Angel "Mista" Ferrer opened the scoring for the visitors after just five minutes - Raul equalised for Real, later in the half.

Atletico Madrid made a hugely positive start in the hunt for their first victory since 1999 over arch-rivals Real.

Miguel Angel "Mista" Ferrer needed less than six minutes to silence but a few hundreds fans in the sold-out Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday (1/10).

The visitors created further chances before being pegged back in the 37th minute when Raul ran in to sidefoot past goalkeeper Leo Franco.

There could have been further additions to the scoreline before the interval - but for some sharp work by the respective goalkeepers - and Maniche and Ruud van Nistelrooy were both denied.

There was no shortage of excitement after the break too - with Atletico again enjoying the better of the exchanges.

Real's unbeaten league record this season looked to have been thrown into jeopardy by the seemingly harsh dismissal of Sergio Ramos in the 63rd minute.

Fernando Torres' contributions after this incident proved much more positive.

Just three minutes after Ramos' expulsion, Torres put Aguero in with a great opportunity to make it 2-1.

And in the 89th minute, that same combination almost produced a winner. Aguero though, couldn't apply the finish - and it ended 1-1.

Real weren't convincing and might have been beaten on another night. But their unbeaten league record stays intact - even if they do lose ground on leaders Barcelona and drop to fourth place.
